With St. Patrick's Day only two weeks away, people have a BIG decision to make. Will you spend your St. Patrick's Day down town on Market Street or will it be Tamm Avenue in Dogtown??? Since the 17th lands on a Saturday, St. Louis will host both popular parades on the same day. Down town has always been on the nearest Saturday to the 17th and the more traditional Hiberian parade in Dogtown is ALWAYS hosted on the 17th. Not familiar with Dogtown? It is the area just south of the zoo, home to great spots like Pat's Bar, Felix's, Seamus McDaniels and St. James Church. I am sure I missed some other great spots but hopefully you are familiar with some of these places and if your not your missing out. I figure if you Google a few of these spots you will get the gist of the area. I have always loved the Dogtown community and their parade has always been my choice. The Dogtown neighborhood, which was predominantly Irish from the 1850-1940's, is the location for the Ancient Order of Hibernians' parade for nearly 30 years. Can you tell I am a little prejudice? The parade in Dogtown just seems so more traditional. Of course the downtown festivities have the 5k run which is extremely popular but if it were me I would be headed for Dogtown right after the race. Good luck runners! No matter what your decision is let's hope for some great weather and a good time by all.
I have photographed both parades and here is a shot down Market Street last year. The complete photo album is here.
Here is a couple shots of the crowds in Dogtown. The complete photo album is here.
I am always scanning the crowd for my favorite costume or character. Here is the photo of my favorite from two years ago. Nice use of duct tape and a great way to keep the beer flowing.
Last year my favorite was this photo of an Irish Jack.....
